The DNA Miracle of Connection
A DNA Missing Link – Above is a short clip. See full film below.
Ms Janet has lived with her daughter, Robin, son-n-law, Derrick and their two daughters since the passing of her husband many years ago. Willow and Laurel adore Grandma. With five total adult children, their spouses and many grandchildren, Janet enjoys a wonderful life. But something was missing.
Born in 1942 a product of a biracial union, Ms Janet’s birth mom gave her up at birth. She was raised by loving parents and had a life full of God’s blessings. As a teenager, Janet learned from kids in the neighborhood that she was adopted. She never discussed this with her parents, because she did not want to hurt them nor have them think that she did not appreciate the life they’d given her. She was secure in their love for her, and her love for them.
After the passing of both her parents, Ms Janet came in procession of her birth certificate for the first time in her life. Armed with the name of her birth mother, she began the quest of finding and connecting with her biological family. After several dead-ends, and little information obtained, Ms Janet surrendered her search.
Hundreds of miles away, and several years later, Kent, found out that his mother had a child three years before he was born. A child he never knew as a sibling, because the child was given up at birth. This new revelation was given to him by an aunt several years after the passing of his mother.
In 2012, Kent decided to take advantage of the services such as 23andMe.com and Ancestry.com in hopes that the sophistication of DNA testing would provide the link to his biological sibling; his mother’s first born child.
In 2017, Robin bought two 23 and Me DNA test kits. She kept one for herself and gifted the other one to her mom for Christmas. With no sense of urgency, after several months in 2018, they decided to send their DNA samples (spit test) into 23 and Me. The results came back in less than two months.
To their utter surprise and delight, the DNA test revealed that Ms Janet had a half brother. With the database contact information provided by 23 and Me, Robin, Derrick and Ms Janet reached out to Kent that very same night. He responded right away sharing in their joy.
They all decided to set a date to meet in person as soon as possible. The date decided on ironically happened to be National DNA Day; April 25, 2018.
The meeting was full of happiness and tears of joy. The frequently used words that I heard over and over again at this reunion was “this is amazing”.
Before my very eyes, I witnessed Acts 17:26-28. Holy scripture reminds us that God determines the places and times. This reunion of two siblings happened at the exact time of their lives that God had already determined for His glory, their joy and our inspiration.
Watch the Motion Picture video below that reveals more of Janet and Kent’s reunion on National DNA Day. In this film, see how they discover that they both have the very same baby picture among family photos. A photo that they each were told was of them. Also share in the heartwarming moments when Janet sees photographs of her birth mom for the very first time.
